Season Ends Amid Pitch Count Controversy

Posted Tuesday, May 30, 2017 by Tony Frascogna

The 2017 Varsity season came to an end on Friday as the team's historic run through the county playoffs as a 14 seed all the way to the Final Four finally ran out of magic.  The game was going to be a homecoming of sorts as the team had not played a home game since May 8th.  Rains on Thursday would change that and the team wound up hosting at St. Joseph's college.  A leadoff walk and an error in the first inning led to two Commack runs.  Senior pitcher Billy Schramm (4-1-1) would settle down after that.  It was "fear the beard" day at St' Joseph's as the Raider faithful had made up face masks with Billy's signature beard being the prominant feature.  Offensively, the Raiders threatened but could not get the timely hit throughout the game.

Controversy erupted in the 7th with two outs as the Commack starting pitcher started a new batter being over the pitch limit.  By section xi rule the pitcher would be deemed ineligible and the game would be ruled a forfeit.  The game was protested and continued with the Raiders losing 7-2.  The section ultimately ruled that the game would stand as played.  Putting an end to the 2017 season for the team.
